What should I use for the look of water in a fake fountain?

My daughter is creating a fountain of youth for a science project. We are using stones and fake plants. We want to simulate water. Maybe magical looking. What should we use that shimmers and ripples like water? Also, what can I use to bond the rocks together firmly. I dont think my hot glue gun is the best choice. Thanks for any helpful ideas.
